Seattle – Today, in honor of legendary Seattle Storm basketball player Sue Bird’s final regular season home game, Mayor Bruce Harrell declared August 7 “Sue Bird Day.”

“Sue Bird set a new example for what it means to be an athlete and a leader – becoming a fixture not just in the record books, but also in our communities,” said Mayor Harrell. “Sue’s talent, work ethic, and commitment to teamwork inspire so many Seattle neighbors and fans across the country and globe. She exemplifies the dedication to excellence and partnership that we strive to build in One Seattle. Congratulations to Sue on a fantastic career. Good luck in these final games with the playoffs on the horizon – and go Storm!”

City of Seattle Proclamation:
WHEREAS, Suzanne Brigit Bird has announced her plans to retire at the end of the 2022 season after spending her entire career in Seattle, being a part of the Storm franchise for 21 of its 23 years of existence; and
WHEREAS, her name has been synonymous with Storm basketball, playing more games than any other WNBA player and doing it all in a Storm uniform, scoring or assisting on 27.6% of every basket in Storm history; and
WHEREAS, she helped guide the Seattle Storm to four WNBA Championships, in 2004, 2010, 2008, and 2020, the only player in league history to win a championship in three different decades; and
WHEREAS, she is the WNBA’s all-time assist leader with over 3,200 career assists—over 600 more than the next closest player, recording at least 150 assists in 15 seasons, four more than any other player; and
WHEREAS, she is one of the most decorated women’s basketball players of all-time, being named a WNBA all-star a record 13 times, earning All-WNBA recognition eight times, winning Olympic Gold five times, World Cup gold medals four times, and two NCAA championships; and
WHEREAS, she has been an outspoken voice for change, using her position of influence to advocate for social change initiatives including LGBTQ+ rights and racial equity both here in Seattle and across the country; and
WHEREAS, the City of Seattle recognizes the important contributions that Suzanne Brigit Bird has provided to not only our city but greater community and wishes her the best of luck in her retirement.
