Seattle – Today, Mayor Bruce Harrell released the following statement:
“President Trump’s ‘signature’ bill is a hallmark of his approach to governing – it’s an action plan to gut needed supports for the country’s most vulnerable residents and families, provide massive tax breaks to the wealthiest among us, and worry about the devastating consequences later.
“Too many Seattleites and Washingtonians will be hurt by this law. Under this bill, more than 17 million Americans would lose their health insurance, including nearly 300,000 Washingtonians. It would slash food assistance through SNAP, with over 1 million Washington residents seeing reduced benefits, and more than 130,000 people at risk of losing food aid altogether. These are direct cuts to the health and security of families, seniors, and working people who need support the most.
“The passage of this bill makes clear why we have proposed – and why we must advance – efforts to protect Seattle from the catastrophic impacts of this bad policy. Last week, we announced a revenue proposal that will generate $90 million to safeguard investments in areas that Trump is threatening while also lowering costs for small business owners.
“While Trump’s bill moves us backward, Seattle will continue to move forward, championing our values of equity, compassion, and opportunity for all.”
